Types of Skills

New technology and process innovation in the workplace have changed the skills required for traditional occupations and led to the creation of new jobs.

For instance, today's forestry and milling operations require individuals with a range of skills to perform everyday job tasks that comply with certification and regulatory standards. Most workplaces are being transformed by information technology.

Skills and knowledge are important to all of use because:
  • Most new jobs require higher levels of knowledge and skills that change quickly. People must have the ability to continually develop their skills and knowledge.

  • Higher levels of education and literacy levels are linked to longer-term employment, and higher per capita income.

  • Better-education people tend to be healthier, live longer, and are more likely to participate in civic and community affairs.
